Laura Scofield

Hi, I’m Laura Scofield, a Brazilian New York-based designer. I’m currently a Design Director at The Atlantic and a part-time faculty at The New School. 

My work has been recognized by the Type Directors Club, Society of Publication Designers, D&AD, Cannes Lions, Red Dot, Print, iF and Brazil Design Awards. Also served as a jury member on the Type Directors Club, Latin American Design Award and Brazil Design Awards. I’m a visiting critic at Parsons Communication Design and former AIGA NY board member.

In my free time, you’ll find me researching about vexillology (the study of flags) 🏴‍☠️

In Event of Moon Disaster: collages and key art for a documentary series that brings to life the most notable speeches the public never heard and exploring how the circumstances of their delivery could have altered the course of history.



Caravelas Display: a contemporary serif
typeface inspired by the elegant contrasts
of traditional expansion models such as
the Didones. With its high contrast and distinctive
teardrop terminals, Caravelas seamlessly 
blends classic sophistication with modern 
design sensibilities. This typeface is crafted to evoke a literary charm.

This project was created during the course of type design at Cooper Union in 2024.




The Atlantic Evergreen: building a sustainable future. The visual identity for Atlantic's Climate Week Event was crafted to embody the essence of nature's infinite cycles of growth and renewal.

The Atlantic Sales Summit: event materials highlighting the visual metaphors possible within The Atlantic’s iconic “A”. We created materials that personified elements of the glyph through scale and collage work reminiscent of The Atlantic’s hallmark illustration style.

AK-47 The Brand for Peace: my master thesis investigates the branding project of the AK-47, the world's most abundant assault rifle of the 21st century. The brand's strategy presents a contradictory approach, portraying war as a path to liberty.

Unfolding the Soul: a reflection on the Deleuzian philosophy of the fold, memory and flags. I wrote this essay in 2018 while researching flags around New York City.

Since 2018 I research, write, teach and lecture about vexillology — the scientific study of the history, symbolism, and usage of flags, or by extension, any interest in flags in general.  It’s a passion, a hobby and serious work. 

My reseach focuses on the multifaceted meaning of flags as a vital medium of communication and visual expression, revealing their pivotal roles in shaping art, identity and activism across social and cultural contexts. 









A few years ago, I was inspired by George Didi-Huberman's insightful work on butterflies and the phenomenology of images, which prompted me to write a short essay exploring the similarities between flags and butterflies.
